My #1 goal is to work with surfers who are serious about getting the board that will take them to the next level. I offer highest quality design and craftsmanship, my personal attention, innovative technology, integrity, a fair price and quick turnaround.
Typically most companies reserve this type of service only for the “pros” and “elite” few. I enjoy making boards for many of the world’s most talented surfers; their feedback pushes me as a designer to shape boards that respond to the highest demands of performance surfing – I bring that same level of quality and attention to you . . . the individual surfer who wants the magic board.
What we get stoked on here at Proctor Surfboards is building relationships…making the board that’s right for you.
No pop-outs. No outsourcing. No marketing team.
What you see is who we are.
Every surfboard has a story. Every surfer has a story.
Shaping boards for 23 years… Todd’s story.
Daily interaction, innovation, and inspiration.
No compromise on quality.
Not making a scene, making a difference.
Remember – the best surfers in the world are the ones having the most fun! It’s your board . . . talk to the shaper.
What’s your shaping philosophy?
Watch, feel, listen, create. Watch what the waves are doing so you can match the appropriate curves of a board’s design to the curve of each specific wave. Feel what the boards are doing under your feet; this is as valuable as second-hand feedback. Listen to each person that is ordering a board from me as if they are as important as the best surfer in the world. Create what is going to be the best board for that surfer by matching up the design of the board to the specific waves they are surfing and their abilities. A magic board will take you beyond what you are expecting to do on a wave….a magic board will feel like it is actually thinking a split hair second ahead of you; already on it’s way to the places you wanna be.
Who is your biggest shaping influence?
My dad. He was actually a police officer, but he taught me the importance of honor and courage in this world, and the value of being able to stand alone for what you believe in, and to always do your best and that the true and right path requires endurance.
What is unique about the boards you shape?
I speak with the Creator of the universe while I design/ shape each board. I ask for creative wisdom that is beyond my own understanding; I ask for humility and insight, so that each surfer getting a board from our factory will be blessed in a way that can’t fully be explained by science or hydrodynamics. I’ve found there is a life of purposeful design that exists outside the algorithms of man’s formulas.

Digital Surfboard Design….Todd explains his progression from handshaping to DSD
I started shaping surfboards in a shed in my grandpa’s back yard and hand shaped production custom boards for 10 years; An invaluable and exciting learning process of hard work and sweat. Over time the ‘hands on’ approach of handshaping thousands of boards
teaches your mind to imagine different waves and to mesh the vast array of surfboard designs to a wide variety of different surfers’ styles.
Your hands learn to create a specific shape that is going to become the synergy between wave and surfer.
Hand shaping allowed me to develop the style and character of my boards.
Over time you begin to find certain designs that work like a dream; the ‘magic boards’ I like to call them.
We’ve all had them; those ones that just go insane…fast when it’s small, yet loose and holding in when it’s big; the boards that do exactly what you want them to do and when you want them to do it. Well, the busier you become hand shaping boards, the more of a toll it begins to take on you. Duplicating the proven ‘magic boards’ becomes time consuming, backbreaking work. Try holding a planer in your hands just above waist height and being on your feet all day buzzing away foam. Your back, wrists, elbows, knees and eyes start to hurt. And at the end of the day you can’t be assured every board is going to stay at that magic level you want.
Over the last 13 years I have been using the DSD System (Digital Surfboard Design). Each board is virtually designed on a CAD three-dimensional design program. I start by choosing from one of a series of proven ‘magic boards’I have on file.
These are my best handshapes (and more recent computerized modifications) developed over time through feedback from team riders, individual customers, friends and from just going surfing.
Then I adjust the length, width, thickness, rocker, rail shape/ volume, and hull contours to complement and enhance each particular surfer’s style.
Every surfer has a different way they approach a wave; the DSD system allows me to customize the board to the surfer, the type of waves they ride and the direction they want to take their surfing.
The true beauty of this system is two-fold: The shaper/ designer can spend time designing and refining boards, interacting and catering to customers. And the surfers (that simply want a great board which is dialed in specifically for them) can get
consistency, quality, and record quick turnaround for their custom board.
All files are kept on a database so your ‘magic board’ can be identically replicated at any time. Let’s say your magic board is/was magic, but now you’re 10 pounds heavier and it is feeling a little small…we get your file, pull your board into the design program, add 1/16″ or 1/8″ thickness to it keeping the rest of the shape the same…Or let’s say your magic board is perfect at your local point break, but you want another board just like it but slightly looser at the beachbreaks….so….we grab your file, add a little more bend to the rocker between your feet, or a little kick out the last bit of the tail off the back fin – and there it is; perfect, fast, loose and holding in through the tight spots! ….Or let’s say you want to put this outline on that bottom curve….this same board with a flatter deck and fuller rails, or vice versa…
The capabilities of the DSD design process are limitless really and help board design to move ever forward providing us all with better boards.
I was once asked by a customer when I first started designing boards on the computer, “What about the soul man. Isn’t it like cheating?” I explained these same capabilities of the DSD system to him that I have just explained to you, and when he understood he replied,
I caught the surfing bug in the 80’s as a skinny young kid.
My mom would take me to the beach as a grom and once that stoke hit I surfed pretty much every day all day. I grew up surfing California’s point breaks in northern L.A. County, Ventura and Santa Barbara. After high school I spent some years on the road traveling; surfing all over Australia, South Africa, Hawaii and Mexico. Shaping grew out of my love for surfing.
No matter where I happened to be, when the swell dropped off, I would manage to find myself at all the back woods shaping rooms hanging out and seeing all about boards and what makes ‘em tick.
I shaped my first boards in a shed in my grandpa’s back yard in 1991
and shortly after got my first job finishing off pre-shapes for McCrystal Surfboards
in Oxnard, CA. I started my own label on the side in ’92 shaping boards for friends, people I surfed with and friends of friends.
I was offered a job shaping full time in San Clemente with Lost Surfboards in ’94
where “I would get my own shaping room and have the freedom to hand shape…as many boards as I want…and get to keep my label on the side”…oh boy! I thought, what could be better than that….so I packed up and moved. Working on different design ideas with Matt Biolos and shaping boards for various tour and team riders helped to hone my design and hand shaping skills…
and was a lot of fun.
After awhile my heart longed for the open country and long points of Ventura,
and the vision of a state-of-the-art board operation there. I opened the doors of the factory in 2000 and have been dedicated to building boards that move ever forward with the changing face of performance surfing; Boards built with the best quality in mind, and always looking for fresh, new, innovative ideas in materials and design.
God has blessed me with a supportive wife that works alongside me and
a fine crew that has the same level of care and desire to put out the best boards we are capable of.
